How to choose the right leader for your project

The right leader: qualities needed

It may not be an easy task to choose the best leader for a project. To make it clearer who can cope with such a complicated task successfully, it's worth paying attention to the most common qualities leaders possess.

Emotional intellect

The leader must see and correctly interpret the emotions, motivation, intentions of colleagues and subordinates. Developed emotional intelligence, being one of the flexible skills, helps to manage your own and others' emotions.

Authority

The leader has unquestioned authority among colleagues. The basis of authority is moral and professional qualities, it often takes years to earn it. An effective leader is a good specialist, such a person is disciplined, fair in relation to colleagues, and balanced in communication.

Negotiation skills

The leader knows how to negotiate: with management, colleagues from other departments, subordinates, counterparties. And for each type of opponent, a different negotiation strategy is needed, as all of them have different motives. A person with strong leading qualities understands it.

Ability to motivate and inspire

The ability to motivate consists of creating an impulse for action that stimulates both oneself and others. Usually, there are 2 types of motivation: "From" and "To". From fear or To love. From minus or To plus. Different situations need different motivations to be applied. It is more efficient to alternate them.

Inspiration is a special way of motivation that makes it possible to create not only a short-term impulse but a sustainable and long-term motivation. The future should be so colorful and attractive that you want to get into it faster and dive into it headlong. A leader with a good vision can easily inspire people.

Organizational skills

It is very important for a leader to be able to gather a team of the best professionals in their field and to organize the process of the activity itself. This includes such qualities as planning, delegation, eliminating unnecessary actions, and so on. The entire team should work together with the leader to improve key performance in a friendly environment. This is facilitated by the creation of group work when the result depends on the total effort. This brings team members closer together and allows them to cope with the assigned tasks more efficiently.

Support

This leadership quality includes the ability to support like-minded people and followers in difficult situations. People will certainly support a leader who cares not only about his own interests but also about them. Without this quality, it will be difficult for a leader to maintain his authority. Moving towards a goal means not only solving difficult tasks but also building a strong relationship.

Integrity

Internal integrity is a leadership skill that integrates all of the above qualities. This is the creation of a balance of all parts and manifestations of a person. Personality is integral when the whole essence of a person is directed like a stream in one direction as if subordinated to a single plan. One wants to follow a leader when he not only knows where to go but also shows it vividly. A step towards gaining integrity is the leader's awareness of his mission or his own uniqueness. A person who has an understanding of his mission knows for sure or just feels what needs to be done while receiving pleasure from the very process of his own activity and life in general.

Confidence

Confidence is defined as the basic state that a leader should have. The state of confidence is associated with reliability, it seems that you can rely on such a person, you can trust him, you want to follow him. A confident person can be noticed just by having a look at his body: straightened shoulders, slender posture, even breathing, speech is slow and intelligible.

Such a person always keeps eyes on the interlocutor. All of this relates to personal confidence. And there is also a spiritual belief in a positive outcome of the plan. Not everyone succeeds in developing real confidence, but if it's present, people will follow such a person.

Things to remember about leadership

  • In any company, there are formal and informal relationships between employees.
  • The head of a company is not always the leader in the team, and the leader does not necessarily occupy one of the main positions. But it is the leader who often achieves good results.
  • Leadership is based on the correct use of formal and informal tools to achieve goals.
  • A true leader must have a set of useful qualities (we have described them already), be productive, understand the motives and intentions of other people. Personal effectiveness, professionalism, and credibility are important.
  • Leadership does not work without self-motivation, self-confidence, the ability to communicate and negotiate.
