This month we will meet up at the Myriad Botanical Gardens to enjoy an installment of their Sunday Twilight Concert Series.  The band is scheduled to perform several covers sure to keep you and your mentee singing all evening.  Make sure to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to keep yourself comfortable, and we will bring the picnic fare.  

The concert starts at 7:30pm, but we will shoot to arrive at 7pm to scout out a good spot on the lawn - it fills up quick!  Join us for this relaxing and social experience with an RSVP to advocate@thementoringproject.org.

Our next Mentor Moment event will be Thursday, July 7 at 5:30pm at a gathering called Jammin Hoops Fest (JHF) happening at the Northeast Recreation Center in Northeast OKC.  We're teaming up with the OKCPD's FACT Unit for a community event featuring free food, basketball and life skills.  Community members and vendors are invited to participate in this opportunity that connects the city.

Man Up Leadership Retreat

Each Spring, the Oklahoma City Police Department's FACT unit hosts a lock-in project called Man Up.  Select students are invited to gather with community leaders and mentors to learn truths about authentic manhood.  Over the course of the two day experience, participants discuss and participate in activities related to integrity, compassion, confidence, self control, perseverance, bravery, humility, authority and responsibility.

Blanket Drive OKC PD FACT Program + @TMProject

The Mentoring Project works very closely with Oklahoma City Police Department's gang prevention and character development FACT Unit.  The Mentoring Project has a staff site coordinator at each of the two community centers that anchor our mentor matching program in OKC.

The FACT program kids, many of whom are mentees with The Mentoring Project, have put together an incredible community service project.  Our kids are collecting new and gently used (CLEAN) blankets to provide for homeless neighbors in their community.

Do you have a little bit of Indiana Jones deep inside you? This month's Mentor Moment involves a private tour of a well known and highly admired dinosaur bone collection housed in downtown Oklahoma City. In addition to seeing entire dinosaurs on display, participants will get to see the behind the scenes photos and hear the stories about where and how the bones were discovered, recovered and preserved.

DowntownOKC, Inc. has graciously donated tickets for us to visit the Devon Ice Rink for our November Mentor Moment.  The Mentoring Project has taken mentor / mentee pairs ice skating the last two years in a row, and this activity is a favorite among our group.  We're excited to slip and slide on the ice one more time as we carry on the tradition.

PLACE CONFERENCE - ACTION WORKSHOPS

Saturday, September 26th.  Check-in at 9:15am and the conversations start at 9:30am.  Action Workshops will conclude at 12:30 pm.  Based on feedback from The Mentoring Project's 2014 conference, we are offering a Saturday post conference Action Workshop as an experiment.  The Action Workshop will be held if we have 40 or more registrations.  The Mentoring Project will facilitate a guided discussion, and provide additional resources, that correspond with each speakers talk. Participants will be seated by geographic region and tasked with determining action steps for their regional area.  The Action Workshop is a great opportunity for folks to make alliances across industry, municipal and community involvement spheres.  Geographically focused action steps will be submitted to The Mentoring Project staff and The Mentoring Project will follow up with a quarterly coaching call for each region for one year.

OKC MENTOR MOMENT - OUTDOOR AND ANIMAL ADVENTURES WITH PARKS IN FOCUS

Parks In Focus trip leader will provide each mentor / mentee pair with a digital camera and take us on an hour hike with instruction on picture taking techniques and outdoor flora / fauna and wildlife.  We will then move indoors for an interactive presentation with some of the Nature Center animals and finish our time together with a sack lunch.  Parks in Focus staff will later download pictures from the experience to CDs for eventual distribution to mentors and mentees.

THE DIRTY 30 MUD RUN

The Mentoring Project is taking a dive into the mud!  Okay, we won't actually be doing the mud run, but a portion of the proceeds from this event will directly benefit The Mentoring Project and we're excited to be a part of the experience.  TMProject staff will be present to cheer on participants and to inform those interested how they can get involved in mentoring.  Make sure to stop by our booth and say hello!
